On Brand – 28 Sept/5 Oct 25

Another two weeks another “where the heck did those two weeks go?”. It’s been a bit of a blur as I dealt with some back and stomach issues. You know, after I tweaked my knee and got the cold from heck not too long ago. I’m starting to believe I’m related to the biblical Samson — I chopped off my hair and lost all my power. And by “power” I mean “youth”.

🍴: There’s been a lot of bland food, but also some major wins.

Bavette with miso-pistachio romesco and roasted sprouts and spuds. This recipe from the new Food & Wine is perfection. And not just because there were no forbidden ingredients in it.

Salmon salad with endive, beets, and a a horseradish yogurt dressing inspired by this in the new Bon Appetit, subbing shaved fennel for shallot, as per uszh. The magazine pic is much better than the one I took.

Brown butter mushroom risotto in roasted acorn squash.

So decadent, Hampton didn’t even miss the meat.

We made extra risotto to try our hand at arancini. Unlike my first attempt, lo, so many years ago, this was a win. Served with grilled shrimp with a creamy cocktailish sauce and grilled zucchini rollups with goat cheese and Kalamata olives. Party food! No pic bc too excited.

🥃: Lots of ginger seltzer from a trip to Wegman’s and ginger-mint tea I picked up at Compare Foods and promptly lost in a formerly disorganized cabinet. Brought in a shelf so I could see everything just in time, apparently.

🐶:

Once again, no one is ever as comfy as the Libbydog.

Meanwhile, the angriest baby who hates when anyone dares to get too close once she’s comfy and who had already put herself to bed, decided to join us for TV time and that snuggled up to the snoozing George was the way to go.

(And yes, he’s doing the late summer molt and our house is even more covered in fur than usual.)

📚: I’m in the midst of an ARC that is the fourth book in a series I discovered through Voracious Readers Only the other year and am rationing it because I don’t want it to be over. The rest of my recently read list is a mix of pretty good white lady and YA thrillers.

Special shoutout to Chelsea Ichaso’s Dead Girls Can’t Tell Secrets for being Available Now on the Libby app and really hitting the teen mystery spot when I should have been sleeping.

🎭: Work continues on murder mystery memorization and Mordreadi! We saw some friends in Kernersville Little Theatre’s Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder and, in the words Jenny, talented friends are talented. One of them is staging the staged reading of Mordreadi! and another got pulled into its cast when someone else had to drop. Also in the GG cast was Mr. Hart from my second 9 to 5 — and we finally figured out we are neighbors thanks to a conversation he had with the aforementioned Jenny, who was the sound designer. Because theatre is the smallest world ever.

Also, I did a one-off week at my holiday church for their anniversary and got my Lessons & Carols music. Oh — maybe this is why I have been watching holiday editions of The Great British Baking Show…
